Ride on for the female cyclists of Wyndham

If you’re a woman new to cycling or just want to learn the basics of bicycle maintenance, a new program giving Wyndham women the skills they need to take to the road with confidence could be just the thing.

Led by professional, accredited cycling coaches from Wheel Women, the free six-week course will cover everything from road rules, bicycle gears and riding in groups to fixing a loose chain, changing a tyre and repairing a puncture.

A helmet will be given to all participants in the course, which is supported by Manor Lakes Cycling Group, Victoria University and Wyndham council.

Organiser Mark England, of Manor Lakes Cycling Group, said the program was about empowering women.

“It’s designed for both novice riders and those with some experience but who are not sure about getting on the road,” he said.

“The aim is to help build their confidence and also leadership skills so they can eventually start leading organised rides of their own.

“We’re also hoping to run similar programs for children.”

The Wheel Women program will be held every Sunday, 9.30-10.30am, from February 8 at Wyndham Vale Community Centre,
86 Manor Lakes Boulevard, Wyndham Vale.
