Wyndham still the popular pick for homebuyers

Wyndham suburbs are continuing to prove popular with homebuyers, with Point Cook and Werribee recording the highest number of sales in the western suburbs in the first half of 2014.

New data from the Victorian Valuer- General’s office reveal that 285 houses were sold in Werribee and Point Cook between January 1 and June 30 last year. They were followed by Sunbury with 275 and Tarneit, 259.

In Hoppers Crossing, 237 houses were sold, while Truganina had 120 sales.

In Wyndham Vale, 163 houses changed hands, while 54 were sold in Williams Landing.

Werribee also retained its title as Wyndham’s least expensive suburb, the median house price falling 3.1 per cent from $309,500 in June 2013 to $300,000 in June 2014.

Harcourts senior sales partner Michelle Chick said Werribee was popular with buyers because of its proximity to the city.

She said buyers were interested in Werribee because they believed they were getting more value for their money than in other Wyndham suburbs, such as Hoppers Crossing.

Point Cook prices rose a modest 1.6 per cent from $438,700 in June 2013 to $445,500 in June last year.

LJ Hooker Point Cook director Paul Caine said Point Cook remained popular with families.

“Point Cook has a family feel to the area and it’s only 20 kilometres to the city,” Mr Caine said.

“It has the family-oriented facilities that people are looking for, such as parks and good schools.”

House prices in Hoppers Crossing jumped 9.7 per cent in the same period, increasing from $310,000 to $340,000, while Tarneit prices rose 4.9 per cent to $385,000.

Wyndham Vale’s prices also increased by more than four per cent to $325,000.

Prices in Truganina rose from a median of $355,000 to $360,400, while in Williams Landing they fell from $520,000 to $460,000.
