The $2 million civic centre development has received the green light after almost a year of debate. Controversy has raged over the cost of the centre, with arguments about its size and whether the council can afford the repayments. While Cr Neville Hudson said he felt the project was beyond the council’s capacity to pay, Cr Laurie Etherton, in recommending the council go ahead with new centre, said it would cater for the shire’s needs for the next 20 years. “If we stop now, we will regret it,” he said.

Werribee council has rejected a bid to make Werribee Cup Day a half-day holiday. The proposal by Werribee Racing Club was knocked back despite efforts by some councillors to raise support for the idea. A move to advertise the request and seek the views of the community was also defeated. Cr Stuart Southwick argued in favour of the holiday, saying it would boost local tourism. However, Cr Glen Clark said there were already too many public holidays and the real question was how much it would cost traders.

An internal investigation will be carried out by the Port of Melbourne Authority over its apparent failure to install warning signs at a Werribee South beach where a 12-year-old boy was killed by a power ski last weekend. The boy died after the ski hit the rubber dingy in which he was sitting with his 10-year-old brother. The small, family cove where the boy was struck was zoned exclusively for power ski use in July, 1994 and signs should have been installed.

Werribee shopkeepers are demanding action against drug dealers they claim are doing deals in broad daylight off Watton Street. A concerned business owner said dealers had set up shop on seats in Station Place, with some sellers having small children in tow. “If I’m carrying money, I’m scared to death,” she told the Banner. Another business owner said the problem was not confined to Station Place and warned of a looming war between rival local ethnic gangs.
