Happy family makes Eileen smile

Eileen Donovan, who will celebrate her 100th birthday later this month, says that her proudest achievement is her family.

Mrs Donovan, who was born on April 25, 1919, is a resident of the Baptcare Wyndham Lodge Community in Werribee.

She said the secret to living a long life was good food and good family.

“I have three wonderful sons and three lovely daughters-in-law,” she said.

Mrs Donovan also has several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

“They are all very good people and all very lovely to me,” she said.

“I can’t complain – I’m a very happy lady and I am very lucky.”

Mrs Donovan said both of her parents came from England. Her father served in the British army before immigrating to Australia.

Mrs Donovan grew up in Tasmania and later moved to Victoria, where she lived in Longford and Avondale Heights.

“Also, I don’t play it anymore, but I used to love hockey,” she said.

“I played for some country clubs, which was very nice and we enjoyed ourselves, which is the main thing.”

Mrs Donovan said she barracked for Carlton in the AFL and enjoyed eating chocolate – “but not too much”.

For her 100th birthday, her family is planning to celebrate with a party at Wyndham Lodge.

Mrs Donovan said she had received letters from the Queen and Governor-General, congratulating her on turning 100.
