On Point for Lunar festival

The Lunar New Year Festival at Point Cook Town Centre will feature fireworks, food, children’s activities and Chinese cultural displays.

Lion and dragon dancing will be included in this year’s festival, which will celebrate the Year of the Pig.

Dragon dancing, a tradition of the Han people, is performed at many Chinese festivals to scare away evil spirits.

The Point Cook Cultural Community, the event’s organiser, is hoping to top the 20,000 attendance of last year’s festival.

The festival, which has a multicultural theme, will also feature tai-chi and taekwondo, Bollywood performances, African drummers, a children’s choir, hip-hop and performances from the Universal School of Music.

Among those performing will be children and teachers from Rainbow Bridge Education, who have been rehearsing for months.

There will be plenty of entertainment for children at the festival, including face-painting, lantern workshops, jumping castles, a slide, mini-golf and the Point Cook Fire Brigade truck.

Information displays will be provided by Wyndham council, Werribee Mercy Hospital, West Gate Tunnel and Chinese cultural groups.

The festival will be held at the Point Cook Town Centre on Saturday, February 16, from noon to dusk, when a display of fireworks will be held at the Dunnings Street Oval. Sponsors include Wyndham council, Stockland, Century 21 and the Victorian Multicultural Commission.
