Step it up for charity with fun run

The Manor Lakes, Wyndham Rotary Fun Run/Walk is on again this year, raising funds for a worthy cause.

The majority of funds raised by this year’s event, to be held on March 17, will go to the Werribee Mercy Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.

Entrants will be able to run five or 10 kilometres, or walk four or eight kilometres, around the scenic Werribee River in Werribee.

There will also be a 1500-metre run for children aged 12 and under and a 400-metre run for children aged six and under, along with other fun activities for youngsters.

The patron for this year’s fun run and walk is Werribee Mercy Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit director, Dr Mainak Majumdar.

“Werribee Mercy Hospital is thrilled to be in partnership with the Rotary Club of Wyndham for this year’s event,” Dr Majumdar said.

“The Wyndham Rotary Fun Run and Walk has something for everyone, from the serious runner to the weekend shuffler and even those who just enjoy a good walk – I encourage you, your family and friends to get behind this long-established, family-friendly event.”

The ambassador for this year’s walk and run is Luke Mathews, an athlete from the western suburbs who grew up attending the Altona and Werribee little athletics centres.

Mathews represented Australia in both the 800-metre and 1500-metre runs at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

He also competed in both events at the last year’s Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, winning a bronze medal in the 800 metre final.
