Werribee has swarmed finals contender Fitzroy Victoria for an upset 98-72 win in the Bowls Victoria division 1 at Chirnside Park on Saturday.
The Bees were in serious danger of relegation at the mid-season break, but two wins out of three since the start of the new year has eased those fears somewhat.
They are now 21 points clear of the bottom two with four rounds to play.
More importantly, Werribee is starting to produce its best bowls of the season.
The Bees not only beat a Fitzroy Victoria side in the top four, but did so with a commanding performance.
They rose to seventh place on the ladder after winning three of the four rinks and claimed 16 competition points.
Rob Patton and Rob Smith had comfortable victories for Werribee.
Peter Yasar did it the hard way, coming back from nine shots down to win by a single shot, storming home with a five, followed by two threes.
Bees player Steve Weston reckons his side is on the up.
“The team’s confidence is now sky high at present with the team believing it can create another upset next week,” he said.
Werribee will face fourth-placed Glenroy at Chirnside Park on Saturday.
In division 2, Hoppers is licking its wounds after a 98-52 punishment from Altona at Civic Parade on Saturday.
Hoppers appear to be headed for a mid-table finish as they are 63 points out of the top four.
