Fears that Werribee’s future growth could be in jeopardy because of restrictions due to drainage problems have been dispelled by the state government. However, it’s likely development will be barred in some areas because of heightened flooding risks. A report by the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission on flooding and Werribee River is expected to clarify the situation in relation to building west of the river.

Twelve youths appeared in Werribee Magistrates’ Court last week to face charges including dangerous driving after police busted an illegal drag meeting in Cherry Lane, Laverton last year. The court was told there were more than 200 cars and about 500 people when officers swooped on the area. Seventeen youths were charged with a range of driving offences stemming from the blitz and after hearing 12 of the cases, the court imposed fines totalling $8000.

A shotgun brandished by a man in a Werribee street last week is believed to have been one of 15 stolen earlier this month in a raid on a local sporting and leisure goods store. On April 1, a man aged in his late 20s or early 30s was seen with a shotgun on Gibbons Street, but fled on foot after police arrived. The gun was found in the front yard of a nearby house. Police said the gun matched one stolen from the Gone Bush, Bait and Tackle store on Watton Street.
