Bags of Christmas cool

Boomerang Bags Wyndham volunteers will be doing their bit for the environment in the lead-up to Christmas.

The group – which was named Wyndham council’s Volunteer Community Group of the Year in August – has made more than 500 reusable Christmas present bags to sell at Tarneit Central shopping centre during the first two weeks of December.

Boomerang Bags Wyndham organiser Wolf Graf said the bags were crafted using new, used and vintage fabrics.

He said Boomerang Bags volunteers would also be wrapping Christmas gifts in fabrics that could be re-used as linen and dish towels or for craft projects.

“We’re very excited to have the opportunity to show people how to wrap presents in a sustainable fashion,” he said.

“The wrapping paper we purchase these days is, in most cases, not biodegradable or recyclable due to the dyes and plastic coating used.”

He said some of the donated material used to make the Boomerang Bags came from the
St Vincent de Paul opportunity shop in Hoppers Crossing, the Salvation Army’s thrift shops and the Rotary op shop in Werribee.

“It’s really amazing, when you see all the fabrics arriving – to think it could all have ended up in landfill,” he said.

The Boomerang Bags will be on sale at Tarneit Central between Tuesday, December 4, to Saturday, December 8, and Tuesday, December 11, to Saturday, December 15, from 10am to 2pm each day. Cost: large bag $10, medium bag $8, small bag $6.

The Boomerang Bags stand will also be selling Lions Christmas cakes.
