Former Werribee Racing Club chairman Bob Gard has blamed the club’s committee for damage to sections of the track at last week’s mid-week meeting. The meeting was abandoned after just four races when holes, some up to 15 centimetres deep, appeared near the running rail, with Mr Gard saying the wrong type of soil had been used on the track during last year’s improvements, which had contributed to the problem. Mr Gard, who is still a committee member, said the club’s credibility had been seriously damaged.

Wyndham council will meet soon to decide whether to appoint a leading international port and harbour designer to draw up plans for a multi-million dollar harbour development at Werribee South. The Spoerry Group has already designed ports in New York and St Tropez and submitted a plan to redevelop Melbourne’s Docklands precinct. Greg Aplin, the director of Wyndham’s economic development unit, is hopeful the project will receive financial backing, possibly from overseas.

The chamber is now looking at reinstating the special rate at $360 for a further five years, however, some traders have given the idea the thumbs down, claiming rates are already too high.
