Wyndham council will write to more than 10,000 landowners to remind them to keep their properties fire safe.
The council will remind the owners of vacant land that they are required to maintain grass and vegetation on their properties to a maximum height of 150 millimetres.
Safer communities portfolio holder Kim McAliney said landowners were also required to remove all grass and vegetation along fence lines.
“If you live on a rural property or own a vacant plot of land, October through to March is a vitally important time to be aware of your responsibilities as a landowner in Wyndham,” Cr McAliney said.
“That’s why council is in the process of writing to property owners. We will also be starting to inspect some properties during summer, with follow-up inspections taking place mid-2019.”
Cr McAliney said that if property owners did not comply with council requirements, they could be served with a notice containing the details of work that needed to be carried out to address risks.
“If this initial notice is not adhered to, council can issue an infringement, prosecute or take action to maintain the property at the cost of the landowner,” she said.
