Emergency services are on the scene after a car crashed through the front of a Werribee pizza store and neighbouring businesses this afternoon.
The dark grey Ford Falcon sedan, bearing green P-plates, drove through the front doors of a building that houses the Crust Gourmet Pizza Bar, Unison Community Housing and the Melbourne City Institute of Education, on the corner of Watton and Cherry streets about 2.10pm today.
No-one was injured in the collision. The driver, a man in his 20s, was taken to Werribee Mercy Hospital in a stable condition.
While the exact circumstances leading up to the crash have yet to be established, Senior Constable Darren Apps said police believed speed was a contributing factor in the crash, with the wet road conditions also a contributing factor.
Werribee CFA captain Michael Wells said a woman and a child in the building’s lift at the time of the accident, who were initially thought to be trapped, simply rode the lift to the top level and evacuated the building from a back entrance.
He said emergency crews were assessing the structure of the building among other things before winching the car out of the storefront.
The entrance to Watton Street from Cherry Street has been closed off to traffic as emergency services assess the scene.
It’s the second time in recent years that a car has crashed through the Crust Pizza shop, with a similar incident occurring in September 2016.
