A Hoppers Crossing student with a passion for politics and creating an environmentally sustainable future has been recognised by the state government for his efforts.
Jagveer Singh, 17, was one of eight students to receive a VCE Leadership Award last week for his exceptional leadership qualities both in school and the broader community.
The year 12 Hoppers Crossing Secondary College student has worked tirelessly to engage the community about the impacts of climate change and the importance of moving Australia beyond coal to renewable energy, and campaigned to stop construction of the Adani mine.
He is a regular volunteer with the Australian Youth Climate Coalition, helped create a Green Team at Hoppers Crossing Secondary College, and created an Australian politics club within the school.
This year, he was a member of the school’s Youth Parliament team.
Jagveer, who plans to study law at Melbourne University next year, said he was pleasantly surprised to be a recipient.
“I’m not a college captain and I don’t hold any official positions,” he said.
“It really goes to show that you don’t need to have those powerful positions to make changes and be influential in the community, all you need is being able to talk to people.”
