Students take on Bollywood dancing

Suzanne Cory High School will become a sea of colour on Saturday when six high school dance groups take to the stage in a Bollywood dance-off.

The groups from schools across the western suburbs will compete in the High School Dance Competition.

Organiser Archana Koorthy says the competition has been about two years in the making.

She hopes it will encourage more young people to take up dancing and show off their creativity.

“I’m a dance teacher and I am passionate about dancing,” Ms Koorthy said. “I wanted to do something for the youth in the area.

“This is a platform to promote teamwork, boost confidence levels and inspire students to connect culturally through the art of dance.”

The theme of the competition is Bollywood dancing, although teams can incorporate other dance styles into their routine.

Ms Koorthy has visited the schools taking part in the competition to teach the students some Bollywood dance moves.

“We chose it as the theme because it’s so popular. Everybody loves Bollywood because of the colour.

“Some of the teams have been proactive and looked up Bollywood dancing on the internet. Everyone knows about Bollywood these days.”

Prizes will be awarded for choreography, costumes and male and female performers.

The competition starts at 4pm. The entry fee is $20. Details: www.facebook.com/highschooldancecompetition
