Werrribee All-Abilities is shooting hoops

It’s the basketball team giving special needs kids some much-needed time on the court.

The Werribee All-Abilities Basketball Club started out with six members four years ago and has quickly grown to include 40 players between the ages of five and 28, who compete in all-abilities tournaments across Melbourne.

Werribee’s Kylie Bozanic got the ball rolling because she wanted her son Kyle, who was born with quadriplegia dystonia, to get involved in sport.

Ms Bozanic, who is club secretary and a coach, said the players were grouped into teams according to their abilities, and took part in basketball drills and training on Tuesday nights at Eagle Stadium.

“All the players love to come to play basketball, get fit and be active. It helps with their social skills,” she said.

The club was able to buy new uniforms and equipment recently thanks to a $2500 grant from the Werribee Bendigo Bank branch. Salva Minniti from the Bendigo Bank said she was passionate about helping kids in the community.

The club is open to anyone with physical or intellectual disabilities, or chromosomal disorders. New players are welcome.
