Burglary rates falling

Most postcodes in Wyndham have a higher burglary rate than the state average, according to new statistics from the RACV.

A recently released report by the insurer shows that on average, one in every 69 homes across the state was burgled in the 2016-17 financial year.

In the 3029 postcode, which covers Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit and Truganina, the average was one in every 60 homes.

In the 3024 postcode, which takes in Mount Cottrell and Wyndham Vale, one in every 66 homes was burgled.

One in every 69 homes was subject to a burglary in the 3030 postcode, which covers Werribee, Werribee South, Point Cook and Quandong.

Despite being above the state average, the number of burglaries in Wyndham postcodes actually dropped when compared to the 2015-16 financial year.

The report stated that for the 2015-16 period, an average of one in every 52 homes was burgled in the 3029 postcode, one in 49 homes in the 3024 postcode and one in 55 homes in the 3030 area.

Across the Melbourne metropolitan region, Cardinia, Clyde and Clyde North topped the list for burglaries in the past financial year with an average of one in every 20 homes.

RACV’s public policy and corporate affairs general manager Bryce Prosser,  said suburbs with new housing estates were often popular with burglars.

“We believe this could be because new homes include new appliances and often adjoin vacant blocks, which aid quick entry and exit,” Mr Prosser said. He said RACV statistics showed that one in six of all break-ins occurred through an unlocked or open door or window.

The RACV said its data was compiled using data from bodies such as the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Crime Statistics Agency.
