Lead-foot drivers were stopped in their tracks during the Melbourne Cup long weekend.
A total 417 offences were detected on Wyndham roads as part of Operation Furlong, a five-day high-visibility operation targeting the major causes of fatal and serious injury crashes.
Westgate Highway Patrol caught out 115 speeding drivers during the operation. Also detected were 28 mobile phone offences, 23 unlicensed drivers, 19 disqualified drivers, 17 traffic signals being disobeyed, 23 drink drivers and four drug drivers.
Three drivers had their cars impounded. There were also 46 drivers caught behind the wheel of unregistered vehicles and 44 seatbelt offences.
Water Police members were out in force at the Werribee South boat ramp on November 5, for Operation Ramp Stop, checking that vehicle, boat and trailer operators were complying with all safety requirements.
Police performed 165 vessel and vehicle checks and issued 16 fines, including four for safety equipment that was not maintained, three for carrying expired flares and two for failing to have a recreational fishing licence.
Sergeant Ben Penrose said the aim of the operation was to make sure safety was taken seriously, on the road and water.
“There’s always a lot going on at the ramp with people putting their fishing and pleasure boats on the water,” he said.
Operation Ramp Stop will be conducted throughout summer.
