Great service rewarded

They’re the men and women who go out of their way to help when disaster strikes – so it’s only fitting they are recognised.

Little River fire brigade’s long-serving members were honoured for their hard work and dedication recently at the CFA branch’s annual service awards.

Ivan Fairchild, 82, officially became the brigade’s longest serving member – he joined the CFA more than 60 years ago.

Mr Fairchild fought in the 1969 Lara bushfire, among countless others, and was the first responder to a number of car accidents. He also served as branch secretary for 10 years.

“It’s always been a country thing, I think,” he said of his decision to join. “Someone’s got to do it. You put your hand up and help out.”

Meanwhile, Lynette Richmond, who was named a Lalor Hero last week, celebrated 10 years of service.

Ms Richmond, who signed up as a supporting member, used to make sandwiches and other snacks for the firefighters and now helps to transport fireys and equipment to the scene of call-outs.

Other members to receive long-service awards included Garry Green (25 years service), Daryl Hedt (20 years), Ben McKnight (20 years), Tim White (15 years) and Michael Webb (10 years).

This month, the Little River fire brigade will celebrate its 80th birthday.
