Werribee split the rinks in its Bowls Victoria division 1 match with Melton, but was well beaten at the weekend.
With Werribee choosing to play on the grass greens to gain an advantage over Melton (which plays on synthetic greens), two heavy defeats cancelled out the wins for the home side as it fell to an 82 (14)-62 (4) defeat.
Skip Brian Turner’s rink had the best results for the home side with a 25-18 win that was backed up by Colin Thompson, who grabbed a tense 16-14 victory.
But a shocking 21-shot loss for Peter Williams’ rink meant those wins were wiped out, and then some, and with Peter Yaser going down 23-15 the win went the way of Melton.
The loss has Werribee remaining in third place on the table ahead of the competition bye this weekend for the Victorian Open.
In division 2, Hoppers took on Werribee’s twos and emerged with an 81 (16)-65 (2) win.
While Werribee shot out of the blocks to lead 21-8 after 30 minutes of play, Hoppers clawed its way back into the contest, with Denis Hewitt’s rink scoring five shots on the final end before the break to take a three-shot lead.
From there Hoppers was never headed as it maintained its place in the top four.
Hoppers will play Williamstown after this weekend’s bye.
