There’s a fairly high chance that residents of Woodville Park Estate have won their campaign to prevent land adjoining the shopping centre from being developed for flats. A residents’ action committee set up three weeks ago to fight the proposal is confident the land will ultimately be used for recreation.

Immigration Department officials detained 30 illegal immigrants on their way to work in the western suburbs last Thursday. Seven of the group were released on the same day but 23 others, including 20 employees of a Laverton North factory, are being held in the immigration detention centre at Maribyrnong.

Leukaemia sufferer Aaron Ussing died in his Wyndham Vale home on Friday because doctors could not find a suitable bone marrow donor for him. He was 11. Hundreds of Werribee people joined his parents, Carmel and Ian, brother Reese and sister Bianca at a Requiem Mass for him at St Andrew’s Catholic Church.
