IN FOCUS: Racing towards a season of fun

Werribee Racing Club general manager Glenn Scott is looking forward to a great racing season, with seven race meetings planned for the summer months and through to autumn.

“The race dates are all very positive, with three Sundays, two Saturdays, a Friday and a Thursday,” Glenn says.

“Our season kicks off with the TAB Werribee Cup on Sunday, December 10, a day that doubles as a very popular Christmas party event.

“We’re thrilled with the bookings so far for the day. Marquees and umbrella packages for corporate marquees have only a couple of spots left. A number of mini-marquees remain, along with some premium dining packages.”

Lots of free children’s activities are planned, including a visit from Santa, and there’ll be live music and plenty for the whole family – and, of course, a great day of racing.

A fortnight after the Werribee Cup, a unique meeting is scheduled for Christmas Eve.

“This is a day we’re all looking forward to,” Glenn says. “It will include heavy involvement from the Werribee CFA to ensure the message of fire safety is well and truly delivered.

“It promises a relaxed environment where friends and families can catch up for a quiet Christmas drink – and hopefully back a winner or two to pay for the Christmas turkey.”

In an exciting time for the club, with 30 well-credentialed international horses from some of the world’s leading stables quarantined here as they prepare for the big spring races in Melbourne – most particularly the coveted $6 million Melbourne Cup.

Glenn is keen to point out that racing enthusiasts can get up close with the horses as they do their trackwork.

“Horses will be on the track between 7am and 9am each morning, with the general public more than welcome to come and witness these top-line horses go through their paces,” he says.

“Entry is through gate 4, off Racecourse Road.”

The popular International Breakfast with the Stars is on again, this year on November 2.

It will feature a star-studded line-up of local and international racing personalities, with tickets costing $99 or $65 for members.

Club memberships cost $50, young memberships $30.

New corporate memberships, costing from $1500 to $3000, can provide outstanding benefits for a business.
