IN FOCUS: Stars, bargains galore on the big day

Some people might like to get their backsides trackside on Melbourne Cup Day, but the Geelong Central Shopping Festival + Sidewalk Sales event promises thrills of a different kind.

To be staged on the famous first Tuesday of November, the community extravaganza harnesses businesses from right across Central Geelong to trade on the footpath and offer in-store specials.

According to Jodie Reyntjes, Executive Officer of Central Geelong Marketing, there’ll be heaps more on offer.

“The easily walked precinct will put on a fantastic day out,” she says. “People can snap up a bargain – perhaps gifts to put under the Christmas tree. There’s going to be some great entertainment, and our wonderful cafes and restaurants will run lunch specials – get in early and make a reservation is our tip.”

Trader hubs throughout Central Geelong will feature a range of pop-up shops, fashion, street food and entertainment.

The Event Hub in Little Malop Street will be the epicentre of festival fun, Jodie says.

“Geelong local, singer and actor Chelsea Gibb, will sing up a storm,” Jodie says. “Chelsea is also our Sidewalk Sales Ambassador. A big band soul sound will come from The Sweethearts, and the cast from this year’s Medimime production of

The Grinch will take a bow.”

A Garden Party area will host a range of pop-up versions of some of Central Geelong’s best-known businesses, while a Pamper Marquee will offer free mini-massages and more. Kids aren’t forgotten – there’ll be a Kids Zone offering a range of fun activities.

If you’re one of the more than 25,000 visitors expected this year, you’ll still be able to watch the Big Race at a range of venues throughout the city.
