Indian cultural precinct gains traction

A push to develop an Indian cultural precinct in Wyndham is gaining traction after the state government announced it would host a public meeting in Werribee next month.

The state government, which has committed $500,000 towards the development of an Indian cultural precinct in Victoria, will hold a meeting at the Wyndham Community and Education Centre in Werribee on August3 to discuss possible locations and ideas for the precinct.

Meetings will also be held in Dandenong and the Melbourne CBD.

Multicultural Affairs Minister Robin Scott said the Indian cultural precinct would be “a place to hold festivals, a hub to support business, a drawcard for tourism, and a meeting place for the entire community”.

The meeting locations were announced in the same week as a Star Weekly story about the plans of Point Cook resident Sudhir Juneja to see the hub located in Wyndham.

Mr Juneja believes either Point Cook or East Werribee – both just off the M1 freeway – would be ideal for tourists on their way to the Great Ocean Road, but he said he would be happy to see the hub located anywhere in Wyndham.

His online petition had been signed by more than 550 people.
