In a hellish final 45 minutes Werribee City sank to a 5-1 defeat to Moreland Zebras in its last home game of the National Premier League 2 west season at Galvin Park Reserve on Sunday.
The Bees went into the half-time break with a lead on the back of a Cameron Davies goal, but they were on the receiving end of some Zebras fury in the second half after they slotted home five goals in 45 minutes.
It was a loss that cost the Bees a rung on the ladder, dropping to eighth.
The Bees will round out their season away to mid-table Ballarat City at Morshead Park Stadium on Saturday.
In state league 4, Point Cook moved to the top of the ladder after a 4-0 win on the road over Bell Park at the Bell Park Sports Club on Saturday.
Jonny Dunn was the star of the show for the Jets with a double.
Dunn has scored nine goals in 16 games this season, including five in his past four games.
The Jets will get a chance to lap up their one-point lead for two weeks with the state leagues having a catch-up round this weekend.
Their next game will be a tough one against North Melbourne Athletic at Saltwater Reserve on September 2.
Truganina Hornets have staved off the threat of relegation.
The Hornets picked up a point in a nil-all draw with Melton Phoenix at MacPherson Park on Saturday, but survival was confirmed when second-last Newmarket Phoenix lost to Surf Coast.
In women’s state league 3, it was a bizarre weekend for Point Cook, but an unforgettable one.
The Jets were scheduled to play St Albans Saints on Friday night, but someone forgot to mark the lines on the pitch, so the game had to be postponed to this weekend’s catch-up round.
While the Jets did not take to the field, second-placed Spring Hills did and had a draw with Melbourne University, handing the title to Point Cook.
It was also a big result for Hoppers Crossing, who won 5-0 over Maribyrnong Swifts and leap-frogged Spring Hills into second. Julia Budiongo-Batota scored a hat-trick for the Reds.
