Beach Patrol turns two

More than 5600 kilograms of rubbish has been collected from the banks of the Werribee River and along Werribee beaches in the past two years.

Beach Patrol 3030 volunteers have picked up 7613 cans and bottles and logged more than 1000 hours of clean-up activities since the group was formed two years ago.

The group meets for an hour each month to help beautify Werribee’s beaches and the river.

In a clean-up day held earlier this month, 47 volunteers from Beach Patrol and the Australian Indian Foundation collected 418 bottles and cans, 42 plastic bags, seven shopping trolleys and eight large bags of rubbish from Wyndham Park.

The organisation celebrated its second birthday recently with a large faux cake outside the office of Werribee MP Tim Pallas and handed out leaflets promoting a container deposit scheme for Victoria.

Beach Patrol 3030 zone manager Rob Bradley said it was time for Victoria to step in line with all other mainland states and introduce a container deposit scheme for drink containers.

“We also need a plastic bag ban, as containers and bags are causing harm to human health and the environment,” Mr Bradley said.

“They will cause a loss of jobs and are hurting fishing and other sea-based industry in Australia and around the world.”
