A major report released this week recommends the appointment of a full-time community worker and the establishment of a community health centre in Werribee. The report, on the needs of the shire, also recommends the establishment of a multilingual information service.

Werribee could become the target of nation-wide and overseas demonstrations because of plans to establish a toxicology testing centre in the municipality. That’s the word from Mr Tony Fletcher, spokesman for the Combined Werribee Action Campaign, which held a protest march through Werribee on Saturday morning.

May 21, 1997

Four State Government ministers have been labelled “contemptuous” for failing to respond to Werribee issues in Parliament last week. The State Labor MP for Werribee, Ms Mary Gillett, slammed the ministers after the shadow Cabinet raised four local issues heard only by the Minister for Education, Mr Gude.

Jetset travel agency in Watton Street has been placed in administration, putting seven people out of work and the travel plans of more than 100 in doubt. The owners of the franchise, Greg and Robin Barber, closed the business this month after “heavy financial losses”, Mr Barber said.
