Wyndham council will spend $17.9 million to create 1400 new carparks in Werribee’s central business district, as part of a project to revitalise the area.
The figure was included in the council’s 2017-18 draft annual budget, which was released last week.
The council’s chief executive Kelly Grigsby said the carparks would be built across four sites as part of the Werribee City Centre Catalyst project.
Last year, the council announced it would partner with businesses to deliver the Catalyst initiative to support large-scale development in the Werribee CBD.
The draft budget also included $1.5 million towards duplicating Forsyth Road, from Sayers to Old Geelong Road.
Ms Grigsby said the total cost of the duplication would be more than $4 million, but did not say where the rest of the funding would come from.
On the topic of roads, the budget has proposed putting $5.5 million towards completing the Tarneit Road duplication between Hogans Road and the Good News Lutheran College.
The council wants to spend an additional $250,000 on installing pedestrian-operated traffic signals at Dunnings Road and Main Street in Point Cook.
The council also hopes to launch a $4 million redevelopment of Wyndham Park, Werribee.
“The redevelopment of Wyndham Park, funded in partnership with the state government, will include a river trail with walking and cycling paths, a lawn for staging events, river terraces with tables and seating, and drinking fountains,” Ms Grigsby said.
The budget also earmarked almost $10 million for ovals, landscaping, a pavilion and carpark at the Williams Landing Boulevard Reserve, due for completion late this year.
The council’s draft budget consisted of $133.1 million in new capital works funding.
General rates are set to increase 2 per cent, in line with the state government’s rates cap.
