A group of Sudanese school mums has launched a calendar and recipe book.
The group of migrant mothers, who meet over English classes, put together the calendar and recipe book in a bid to improve their English literacy, and to help them support their children with their homework.
The Australian Migrant Education Service was approached on behalf of the mums by Catholic Education’s Werribee cluster.
The group comprises mothers of pupils at St Andrews school at Werribee.
They asked AMES for help in bettering their language and literacy skills to a level where they would be confident of putting their work into print, and their English skills to work.
“On meeting the women, they expressed concern that, while they were able to communicate quite well in English, their literacy skills made it very difficult for them to get work,” said AMES counselling co-ordinator Heather Weaver said.
“They wanted to support their families better, assist their children more with their homework and improve their lives in their new country.”
Catholic Education’s Werribee cluster engagement leader Che Vincent said it is hoped the women’s’ efforts in producing the calendar and recipe book will help them in their ongoing search for jobs.
St Andrews Primary School provided a room for the women to work on their projects.
The calendar and recipe book were launched at Wyndham council last week.
