Brand new Tarneit school build kicks off

The contracts are signed, the builders appointed and, by this time next year, Tarneit will have a new primary school.

Preliminary designs for the new Tarneit West Primary School on Hummingbird Boulevard have been released.

The school is due to open for term one next year, and will cater for 475 students, with $13 million allocated to the build in the 2016-17 state budget. Plans include competition-grade indoor netball courts and two outdoor practice courts, plus a soccer field.

Law Architects have been tasked with the two-stage design process.

The first stage includes developing the footprint of the school buildings on the site, while the second stage will define the materials used for the build, engineering requirements and landscaping.

The architects have been working closely with the planning committee and the council to ensure facilities included at the new school are in line with the needs of the local community.

A principal will be appointed in the second quarter of this year, and an enrolment plan will then be developed.

Tarneit MP Telmo Languiller said the new school is part of the state government’s plan to transform Victoria into the “education state”.

“This means investing in growing areas [such as] Tarneit, so our kids have access to the facilities they need to thrive,” Mr Languiller said.

An analysis by the Grattan Institute last year found that Wyndham is going to need more than 1000 new classrooms over the coming decade. These will be needed to cater for a projected 66 per cent growth in the number of students projected to be living in Wyndham by that time.
