One of Tarneit’s most notorious bottlenecks will soon be a thing of the past.
Duplication works along Tarneit Road will begin early next month after Wyndham council last week awarded the tender for the $6.1 million project to Winslow Constructors.
The project will include adding an extra lane in each direction between Hogans Road and Caraleena Drive, installing traffic lights at the Good News Lutheran College entrance, and doubling the size of the Tarneit and Hogans roads intersection.
It also includes construction of wetlands next to the Tarneit West shopping centre to improve the storm water quality and provide more public open space.
More than 20,100 cars travel through Tarneit Road north of Hogans Road each day, according to the council’s most recent traffic volumes survey.
Wyndham mayor Henry Barlow said the project would remove the bottleneck that occurs where Tarneit Road drops to a single lane on either side between Hogans and Caraleena roads.
“If you drive along Tarneit Road you’ll likely know that it drops down to two lanes … and this has probably caused frustrations,” Cr Barlow said.
“Council is adding two extra lanes… reducing traffic congestion and making it easier to get around Wyndham.”
The works are due for completion in October.
