WRFL: Werribee Districts win tough Anzac Day game

Andrew Panayi produced a six-goal dazzler to spark Werribee Districts to a 28-point win over Sunshine Kangaroos in Western Region Football League division 1 at Soldiers Reserve on Saturday.

The low-scoring Anzac Day game played out in slippery conditions and Panayi proved unstoppable, guiding the Tigers to their first win of the season after they trailed by a point at three-quarter time.

Lachlan McDowell, Jameel Sargent and Lachlan Patterson were other key producers for the Tigers ahead of their clash against strugglers Albion at JR Parsons Reserve on Saturday. The Tigers will be full of confidence after booting five goals to nil in the final term at the weekend.

Hoppers Crossing continued its rampaging start to the season, slaughtering Albion by 126 points while registering 20 goals to two.

They had 13 individual goalkickers, including four goals to Wayde Skipper and three to Jordan Mead.

The question still remains, how much ground have the Warriors made up on last year’s grand finalists?

They will get a chance to test themselves against last year’s runners-up Spotswood in a blockbuster on the road at McLean Reserve on Saturday.

Division 2

Wyndhamvale piled on the pain for Sunshine Heights, winning by a mammoth 148 points.

Paul O’Shea (six goals) and Nathan Bisset (five) were impossible to stop around goal as the Falcons made it three out of three.

It was a rough outing for Glenorden, managing just two goals in a 55-point loss to Yarraville-Seddon. The Hawks tumbled to sixth on the ladder as a result.

Manor Lakes booted six goals to one in the last quarter to beat Caroline Springs by 31 points in the Sunday game. Ty Priest was back to his brilliant best with five goals, while Nathan Smithwick snared three for the second week running.

Division 3

Newcomers Wyndham Suns took the challenge up to early flag fancy Albanvale before going down by 18 points.

Tarneit was left to lament its wayward kicking in front of goal in a nine-point loss to Braybrook. The Titans had six more scoring shots but a sloppy return of 7.16 consigned them to defeat.

GDFL

Werribee Centrals failed to register after half time, losing to Geelong West by 30 points and failing to stop a remarkable 60-point swing-around.
