Werribee South named Melbourne’s “least walkable” town

A lack of services and infrastructure in Werribee South has led to the town being named Melbourne’s least “walkable”.

Walkscore.com has ranked all Melbourne towns and suburbs based on their dependency on cars.

Werribee South has been ranked the worst with just three points out of a possible 100.

Wyndham liveability director Kate Roffey said the council was in the process of undertaking works to make it easier to walk and ride bikes across the municipality. Ms Roffey pointed to upcoming works for Werribee South that include:

•The construction of a pedestrian link from Norman-Nolan Grove to Beach Road;

•Linking bus stops to the Beach Road path;

•The installation of a second pedestrian crossing on Beach Road; and

•The installation of an additional bus stop on Diggers Road, near Whites Road.

She also pointed to completed works such as a new pedestrian crossing on Beach Road, and 500 metres of footpath on the north side of Beach Road linking Finch Road to bus services, Price Reserve, and the O’Connors Road milkbar.

Ratepayers of Werribee South president Joe Garra said he was not surprised by his town’s ranking.

He expressed concern for elderly residents in Werribee South, who, if unable to drive, were restricted to their homes.

He was also concerned that Australia Post was not delivering parcels to Werribee South, with residents being forced to travel to Hoppers Crossing to collect any parcels.
