Big West comes to Hoppers Crossing

Big West Festival will hold one of its last hoorahs at Hoppers Crossing this weekend.

Grange Community Centre will take centre stage on Saturday when the festival launches a mobile art space to get people together.

Environmental artist Joanne Mott has spent weeks creating an outdoor nook to encourage people to meet, relax and chat.

Filmmaker Hoang Tran Nguyen broaches diversity in his short film, Starting Conversation, which will be screened at noon on Saturday.

Mr Nguyen says the film features a series of conversations he’s had with people who use Grange Community Centre.

“The conversations have been about living with difference,” he said.

“We’ve been talking about how the area and the demographics have changed so much in the past five, 10 years.

“Population numbers have risen so dramatically, and with that comes a diversity of community that has changed the area.

“We’ve been talking about how to live with difference, how to welcome each other into our worlds and the politics around difference – how to talk to someone who not only looks dramatically different to you, but who thinks, acts … whose culture is very different to your own.”

Mobile art spaces producer Jo Trevanthan says Big West Festival will be running its mobile art spaces until the festival finishes up at the end of the year.

“It brings community art to the community.”

There will also be an open day and community market at the Grange, including a mobile radio station, running 10am until 2pm.
