My Wyndham: Elly Christodoulou

Wyndham council is collecting stories from residents about their vision for the city in 25 years’ time. Cameron Tait speaks to Elly Christodoulou.

What’s your connection to the community?

I grew up in Werribee South and created lots of memories there, like going down to the local milk bar to see the cast of Blue Heelers filming, hanging out with friends around my neighbourhood, building cubby houses, climbing trees and, on hot days, jumping off the Werribee South beach pier after school.

What’s your favourite story about this place?

Going to my parents’ house, my childhood home in Werribee South, on Saturdays for morning tea with the neighbours is one of my favourite things to do.

We sit around the table for hours talking about stories old and new and discussing all sorts of topics.

I could listen to (former Werribee councillor) 93-year-old George Cavanagh’s stories all day.

I have special memories living and growing up in Wyndham, such as riding through the farms on motorbikes with friends, picking and eating fennel on the side of the road, going to parties at Diggers Road hall and being involved with sporting groups, such as Werribee Netball Association and Werribee Hockey Club.

What do you hope Wyndham will be like in 2040?

Full of life with growing and expanding families, employment and business opportunities, with new areas opening up and the development of Wyndham Harbour and East Werribee.

I can imagine there will be plenty of new places for shopping, train stations, educational and medical facilities.

I hope there will be more parks and play areas as well, and that one day Werribee River is cleaned up so children can go there to swim and families can enjoy picnics.
