An abandoned house at Hoppers Crossing has been fenced off to stop antisocial behaviour that has left neighbours frustrated.
Star Weekly last week reported on the frustration of Bernhardt Drive residents who are sick of living next to a house that has been abandoned for five years. It has smashed windows, graffiti scrawled on the walls, rats in the long grass, and squatters coming and going.
Neighbours wanted the property barricaded to stop people from entering.
Just two days after the article appeared, neighbour Marilyn Scott received a letter from Wyndham council notifying her the house would be fenced off within days.
“It’s quite a relief,” she said. “It feels like something is actually being done, and the house is not going to fall down in pieces.
“After all the running around and calls we’ve made, we will finally feel a lot safer.”
Mrs Scott said residents’ main concerns were for the safety of children playing on the streets and about squatters.
“Something has finally been done,” she said. “I don’t know if it’s going to be demolished, but the fence has been erected … it’ll keep out any unwanted visitors.”
The fence was erected on Tuesday.
