Overdose awareness on the agenda

Thursday marked a year since Aaron Short’s death by overdose. His mother, Cherie, commemorated his life at an International Overdose Awareness Day forum.

“My son was studying to be an AOD (alcohol and other drug) worker, so we are continuing his line of work, honouring his legacy,” Ms Short said.

The forum, organised in conjunction with Odyssey House, included speakers from Harm Reduction Victoria, beyondblue and Werribee Mercy Hospital. QC Robert Richter, social worker Les Twentyman and former Collingwood Football Club player and Sober House Living’s Gavin Crosisca, were among keynote speakers.

Ms Short said the forum aimed to educate people and promote awareness about mental health and wellbeing, as well as the use of drugs and alcohol, and the possibilities of overdose.

“The overall message is that overdose does not discriminate,” she said.

“We also hope to convey a warning message that not only alcohol or illicit drugs are dangerous. The number of fatalities rising from prescription drugs is rapidly increasing.

“Medicines are not always our friends.”

The forum was the first of its kind in Wyndham, and Ms Short plans to continue it next year. Details on International Overdose Awareness Day at www.overdoseday.com/get-involved/
