40 years ago

August 18, 1976

Werribee Shire’s new $2.6 million civic centre complex was officially opened on Friday by Sir Henry Winneke, Governor of Victoria. The weather which had previously been wet and windy for two weeks, cleared away during the morning to allow the opening of the place in glorious sunshine. The opening was preceded by Air Force personnel from Laverton and Point Cook, accompanied by the RAAF Central Band, in a spectacular march.

August 20, 1986

A significant part of Werribee’s Biotech development, Melbourne-based company Cordis Bio-Synthentics Incorporated, could be sold off to overseas investors unless $10 million in shares can be sold in Australia by early 1987. According to Cordis Incorporated’s Dr Vittivetpillai Ketharanathan, the company’s US-based parent firm plans to sell off its Australian operation unless the shares can be sold.

A toxic waste dump in Werribee could contaminate hundreds of hectares of farming land and destroy the future of the Werribee South market gardens. According to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics figures, farmers in Werribee grow 60 per cent of Victoria’s vegetables and 22 per cent of Australia’s produce each year.

Wyndham council has assured the hundreds of families who use family day care that changes to the system will not have a negative effect. However, some carers feel they have been “left out in the cold” after learning that the council will no longer run the family day care schemes after changes to federal regulations made the arrangement unsustainable.
