August 4, 1976

Werribee Shire Council is split almost evenly over the question of adopting a policy towards effluent disposal for Melton sewage treatment works. A move by Cr Neville Hudson, MLA, to call for a full environmental impact study of the effects of the discharge of effluent into the river was carried by council with a narrow margin.

 

30 years ago

August 6, 1986

It was the 60th anniversary of the Laverton RAAF Base that brought 450 air force troops marching down Watton Street, standards unfurled and RAAF band booming. With military precision, the troops emerged at the east end of Watton Street at 12.30pm sharp. The strains of marching music were carried on the cold wind and the rain drizzle stopped just in time for the procession.

August 7, 1996

Werribee man Anthony Lobos has described as a “fitting punishment” a 19-year jail sentence for the man who gunned down his wife in their front yard last year. Michael Joseph Challoner, 30, of Parakeet Road, Werribee, was convicted of murdering Mrs Lobos with a rifle from his father’s gun collection. The Supreme Court last Thursday set a 15-year minimum term for Challoner.

The Werribee Mercy Hospital has confirmed it will establish an on-site clinical school for third and fourth-year medical students. The hospital has signed an agreement with the University of Notre Dame’s School of Medicine in Sydney and is expected to start taking students from 2010.
