40 years ago

July 28, 1976

The recently passed legislation which allows adjoining blocks of land to be rated as one property could cost Werribee Shire up to $100,000 a year in rate revenue. In addition it will allow speculators to retain numbers of lots of land without the penalty of having to pay the high minimum rate introduced two years ago.

July 30, 1986

There is a “very real” possibility that the toxic waste dump could end up in Sunshine, but it will still be on the Laverton North boundary, a Werribee councillor said on Monday night. Cr Glen Clark was responding to a letter from a Laverton resident who was concerned about rumors that the toxic plant would be dumped in Laverton.

Salute of a hero – Olympian Russell Mark stands tall after winning Australia’s second gold medal at Atlanta, Georgia, last week. Russell, 32, who spirited away with the medal in the men’s double trap shooting event last Thursday, will bring the gold home to Werribee on Friday. The tall, rangy athlete, has tried to take gold at two previous Olympic Games.

A coronial inquest into the death of a Werribee woman killed by a drug-affected driver moments after police called off a pursuit has recommended a review of chase procedures. Nicole Maree Knox-Smith, 29, died after a stolen car driven by Jeffrey Dobbin, then 30, of Reservoir, collided with her motorbike on the Princes Freeway near Hoppers Crossing on April 16, 2004.
