Teen to see legacy of war first hand

A Point Cook teen is gearing up for the trip of a lifetime.

Evan Rodwell is one of 80 young people from across Australia who will travel to the western battlefields in France over two weeks in July through the Legacy Pozieres Educational Study Tour.

While on tour, Evan will learn about Australia’s involvement in Western Front major battles and the lives of the French people.

The 19-year-old will also walk the battlefields to understand the challenges and sacrifices endured by the Anzacs.

“It means a lot to me to see where it all happened and explore the battle fields,” Evan said.

“The sacrifices our Aussie soldiers made were enormous.”

Legacy looks after more than 90,000 widows and families of ex-servicemen.

Evan, who is currently completing a Bachelor of Arts at Murdoch University, has been involved with Legacy since his father and Navy serviceman Richard died from prostate cancer 12 years ago.

Legacy has helped out Evan and his mother financially and have taken Evan on day trips and camps with youths whose parents have also served.

“They’ve been really good, giving us help,” he said.

Melbourne Legacy president Graeme Plumridge said it was gratifying to see youths such as Evan thrive and develop despite losing a parent.
