Sports shorts: Werribee Devils silver lining

Basketball

Werribee Devils suffered a 92-91 defeat to McKinnon Cougars in the Big V basketball men’s championship at Eagle Stadium on Saturday night. However, there would be a silver lining, as the Devils got over their one-point loss to post a runaway 85-74 win over Bulleen Boomers at East Doncaster Secondary College on Sunday. Import Jeremy Smith scored 37 points and 11 rebounds. In women’s division 1, Werribee thrashed Craigieburn Eagles 78-51 with Jess Slade and Rebecca Van Kuyk notching double doubles.

Cricket

Travis Dean has moved a step closer to the baggy green. Dean, a Werribee product playing for Footscray Edgewater, has been named for the Australia A squad to face South Africa in August. The 24-year-old had an incredible 2015-16 season with the Victorian Bushrangers, making 807 runs at 44.83, with three centuries, four half centuries and a ton in the first innings of the winning Sheffield Shield final against South Australia.

Football

Wyndham Suns coach Matthew Stoodley handed in his resignation following Saturday’s loss to Parkside in the Western Region Football League division 1. Stoodley was the Suns inaugural senior coach, leading the expansion club to the preliminary final before losing to eventual premier Albanvale. Stoodley’s coaching record with the Suns was 12 wins, 10 losses and a draw.
