These two Werribee Guides are all smiles after receiving the movement’s top honours for their age groups.
Cara Marinaro, 13, and Emma Brennan, 10, received Baden Powell awards after completing challenges within the seven main areas of guiding – ‘promise and law’, which requires the daily observance of guiding principles; living in the outdoors; knowledge of world guiding and guiding traditions; patrol systems; leadership skills; and service.
Emma, who had to complete 12 challenges, raised $250 for the Royal Children’s Hospital by selling loom bands, taking a canoe trip and cooking a two-course meal for her family.
Cara had to complete 18 challenges. Donating dog chews to the RSPCA and abseiling were among the tasks that led to her award.
This month, she will become eligible to work towards the Queen’s Guide award, which is guiding’s highest recognition for youth members.
“It feels really rewarding – we feel so proud of what we’ve done,” Emma said.
Cara added: “All the effort paid off.”
