Eagle lands state netball competition

More than 600 netballers, coaches and umpires from across the state will converge at Werribee later this year for the Netball Victoria state titles.

The new Eagle Stadium was last week named as the tournament’s venue for the next two years. The coup for Werribee accompanied the announcement of a three-way partnership between Western Leisure Services, Wyndham council and Netball Victoria (NV) to plan for the tournament.

NV’s general manager of high performance and commercial operations, Michelle Gerdtz, says the tournament will showcase netball talent across all divisions from 19 regions in two days of non-stop action.

NV will release dates and further details of the 2016 state titles later this year.

“The tournament plays such an important role in the development of our Victorian players, umpires and coaches,” Ms Gerdtz said. “The new stadium will be one of the best in the state and a perfect location for this tournament.”

Eagle Stadium, due to be completed by mid-June, will boast state-of-the-art facilities, including 12 indoor courts, four outdoor courts and a gymnasium, making it the biggest in Melbourne’s western suburbs.

Council’s portfolio-holder for sport, recreation and open spaces, Cr Peter Maynard, says Eagle Stadium will be something residents can be proud of.

“That’s why we’re attracting the calibre of competition like the state netball championship, which will bring players, coaches and umpires from across Victoria to enjoy the stadium and all our city has to offer,” he said.

“Having the netball competitions here will no doubt inspire our local netballers to soar to new heights.”
