Police disappointed by driver behavour

More than 110 traffic offences were recorded on Wyndham roads during the Anzac Day long weekend as part of Operation Tribute.

Police detected 29 speeding drivers, 18 seatbelt offences and 13 mobile phone offences.

They pulled over 19 unregistered vehicles and 11 disqualified drivers during the three-day operation.

Eight drivers exceeded the blood-alcohol limit and one recorded a positive drug test.

Across Victoria, police detected nearly 7000 traffic offences and more than 800 criminal offences, including more than 2300 speeding drivers, 805 unregistered vehicles and 381 instances of drivers disobeying signs or traffic lights.

Inspector John Fitzpatrick said it was disappointing to see a continual flouting of laws.

“We say it every long weekend – every day – yet people continue to put their life and the lives of those around them on the line,” he said.

“We also had three fatalities [across Victoria] during the weekend, which is the same as last year – and still three too many.

“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility.

“We need everyone to share the roads and look after each other by taking responsibility for their actions and we need them to start today.”
