Werribee Devils were left heartbroken after going down 91-90 to Hawthorn Magic in a double overtime thriller in Big V basketball women’s division 1 at the Boroondara Sports Complex on Sunday.
The Devils had their destiny in their own hands at the end of the fourth quarter and the first and second overtime periods but could not land the knock-out blow.
The fourth quarter was a tight affair with the Devils coming back from five points down to lead, only for it to be ripped away by a three-pointer from Magic’s Nicole Swan.
The final 1.05 presented numerous opportunities for both clubs but neither could find a match-winning basket.
On the last play, the Devils turned the ball over through Rebecca van Kuyk, who was otherwise flawless with 23 points and 16 rebounds, putting the game into overtime.
In the first overtime, Adoniah Lewis had to make two clutch free throws to extend the game for the Devils, she coolly slotted both.
Trailing by one in the second overtime, the Devils had a chance to go in front, but Jacqui Silcock missed on her field goal attempt and the Magic held on to win by the barest of margins.
The result leaves the Devils second last with just one win in seven games.
They will host another one-win team, Chelsea, at Eagle Stadium on Saturday night.
In the men’s championship, Werribee Devils lost both games on a double-header weekend, including a disappointing 100-82 loss to previously winless Eltham Wildcats at the Eltham High School on Saturday night.
The Devils slumped to 2-6 for the season with a 99-86 home loss to Corio Bay Stingrays at Eagles Stadium on Sunday.
