Three years ago, Emily Martignago found herself with a lot of spare time while studying at university, and looked for a rewarding way to spend it.
The 23-year-old wanted to do something to give her some community credits, so she joined Werribee Fire Brigade as a volunteer.
“I wanted to do something that would look good on my resume,” she said. “And I got more out of it than I bargained for.”
“Joining the brigade has done so much for my self-esteem and personal growth. It’s so rewarding to give back to the community, to know you’re making a difference.”
Emily’s involvement in the brigade is wide-ranging, from revamping the junior brigade as its co-ordinator, to helping organise social events and, of course, fighting fires.
“It’s more of a hobby than a chore,” she said. “I enjoy what I do.
“And being able to make a difference while doing it is great.”
An occupational therapist at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre from Monday to Friday, Ms Martignago says people from all walks of life would enjoy volunteering.
“It’s probably one of the best things I’ve ever done. It’s not for everyone, but if you’re thinking of doing it for the right reasons, then sign up,” she said.
“We have a great sense of family, and you get to find out more about yourself and acquire skills you wouldn’t learn anywhere else.”
Werribee Fire Brigade is on the hunt for more volunteers. Residents aged 18 or more can register by calling 9742 7009.
