A Wyndham residential aged care home is seeking volunteers to join its team.

Mercy Place Wyndham’s leisure and lifestyle co-ordinator, Kerri D’Arcy, says volunteers play a vital role in supporting residents and enhancing their quality of life.

“We work with lifestyle staff and volunteers to set up programs to make sure residents are enjoying themselves,” she said.

“Our volunteers do what they enjoy doing to make sure the social side of being in our home is enhanced for all residents.”

George Azzopardi dedicates his spare time to volunteering at the home, helping out in the gardens and on outings.

“There are two men who love gardening but can’t do it all themselves, so George helps them out,” Ms D’Arcy said.

“He also takes them down to a Werribee pub for ‘men’s business’ for lunch and provides company to residents who don’t wish to leave their rooms. We’re a real family here and the volunteers are part of that family.”

Mercy Health’s operations director of residential aged care, Voula Yankoulas, said volunteers were an important part of the team.

“Volunteers at Mercy Health provide their own dimension of care,” she said.

“They’re not substitutes for paid staff, rather volunteers who contribute to a multi- disciplinary team approach aimed at providing the best possible care for residents, their carers and families.”
