So you’ve seen Underbelly, the televised story of Melbourne’s gangland killings … but it’s time to hear the real story.

Victoria Police’s Westgate divisional commander Stuart Bateson will give rare insights into investigations into this notorious chapter in Melbourne’s gangland history at a presentation in Wyndham on Friday night.

Superintendent Bateson was a detective sergeant with Victoria Police’s Purana Task Force, set up by former police chief commissioner Christine Nixon in 2003.

“By coming along to this presentation, you’ll hear the inside story … the story that hasn’t been told,” he said.

The presentation will start with a look at the first gangland killing, the murder of Alphonse Gangitano – shot in his own home in 1998.

Superintendent Bateson offers insights into how police collated enough evidence to convict Carl Williams of the murder, what happens when victims can’t make statements, and when witnesses won’t co-operate.

The presentation will also feature CCTV footage of crimes, video accounts and audio recordings from devices secretly hidden in gangland members’ vehicles.

The presentation, to be held in the Wyndham council chambers, will raise money for the Leaders of the Future program, which partners 12 students with five police officers, a paramedic, and five sponsors to take on the Kokoda Track next month.
