A family of four have had a narrow escape after their car burst into flames on the Princes Freeway near Werribee on Friday morning.

Two adults and two children were traveling towards Melbourne just after 7am on May 10 when they heard a noise come from the engine of their Kia Carnival.

The driver pulled over in the emergency lane between Farm Road and Duncans Road when the vehicle caught alight.

The family was able to gather their belongings and exit the vehicle before the fire intensified.

No one was injured.

Firefighters from the Werribee CFA wore breathing apparatus as they fought the blaze which was brought under control within minutes of their arrival.

There are still significant delays for city bound traffic on the Princes Freeway and in the Werribee CBD.

The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined but is suspected to be a vehicle fault.
