A man who helps asylum seekers and the president of a theatre company are among six winners in Wyndham’s Community Volunteer Awards.
The winners, named last week, are contenders for Wyndham’s citizen of the year title.
The six individual group winners will learn on August 14 whether they are Wyndham’s citizen of the year for 2015.
The annual awards celebrate the achievements of individuals and groups who have made an outstanding contribution to the community.
Awards were presented in six categories.
For the first time this year, there was a community group award, which was won by Werribee’s The Migrant Hub.
The community engagement award went to Walter Villagonzalo, who has spent 20 years working with migrants to provide accommodation and support to asylum-seekers.
Wyndham Theatre Company president Alan Thompson won the culture, arts and tourism award for his work promoting amateur performing arts in the city.
The environment and sustainability award went to horticulturist Craig Castree, who volunteers at the Werribee Heritage Orchard.Bev Morrissey won the community health and wellbeing award in recognition of the
20 years she has spent promoting physical activity in the Wyndham community, while Rebecca Nix received the sport and recreation award for her work with Werribee Hockey Club.
Khurram Khan, 20, was named young volunteer of the year for his work tutoring, mentoring and volunteering in the community.
